How we detect it
A new pack
A smaller pack usually gets a new barcode, so in the shop it appears as a new product next to the old one. We look for products of the same brand with the same name that differ only in pack size, where the smaller one replaced the bigger one in the same shop.
The usual price
We compare the usual price, that is the most common daily price in the 120 days before the change and the 90 days after it, so that short promotions change nothing. A product is listed when its price per kilogram, litre or piece rose by at least 5%. If the pack shrank by more than 30%, the price must have stayed the same or risen.
Every shop
If a product is sold in several shops, we show the smallest rise. Alcohol is not included. The list is recalculated several times a day.
Frequently asked questions
What is shrinkflation?
Shrinkflation is when a maker shrinks the pack but keeps the price the same or cuts it less than the contents. You pay the same and get less, so the product in fact gets dearer.
How do I spot shrinkflation in a shop?
Look at the price per kilogram or litre on the price tag, not only the price of the pack. In the Cenu Depo app the price per unit of every product is shown for every shop.
